Calypso was born on June 14, 2007 at 3:20 am. She was born at 29 weeks 5 days gestation and was 3lbs 1.9oz and 13 inches long.
She was born after I spent 6 weeks in the hospital with Placental Abruption and PROM (my water broke very very early) While she was born at IU Hospital she was quickly transferred to Riley Children's Hospital Level III Nicu. Riley's NICU is divided up into 6 rooms with 10-11 babies in each room. Calypso was in room 6.
She did well at first and was weaned off the Oscillator Ventilator and onto a regular vent and they started feeds with her also. But then she caught an infection called NEC. NEC is short for Necrotizing Enterocolitis and is an infection that kills the lining of the intestines rendering it dead tissue. Scientists and Doctors suspect an infectious agent as there are outbreaks in NICUs. Unfortunately, no common connection has been found. At the time Calypso got NEC the little boy who'd been in the bed next to her did also.
The infection spread to her kidneys and shut them down completely. Because she still had the infection they were unable to do dialysis. On July 7, 2007 at 23 days old we made the decision to let Calypso go when one of her lungs collapsed due to the horrible fluid build up.
She died at 3:50 PM on 777 which is Heaven's number. We miss her so much and not a day goes by that we do not think of her.
